Apprentices will participate in a cross-functioning role that combines and aligns the work and goals of both departments. With the support and training of Animal Wellness & Research staff and Animal Care staff, the Apprentice will design their own learning goals in accordance with the on-the-job skills training. The experience, and resulting apprenticeship project, are tied to the leaning goals that will be co-created by the Apprentice and their lead mentor through an individualized learning plan and action project. This position will rotate throughout the two departments, including up to two pre-determined sections within the Animal Care Department, in order to develop knowledge and skills at the zookeeper level, with particular attention paid to animal behavior, training, and wellness, as well as guest engagement. This is an on-the-job training program intended to provide individuals with paid experience in the animal care and wellness fields. This temporary 40-week (10 month) professional development opportunity will include experiences working within the Life Sciences Division, including the Animal Care Department and the Animal Wellness and Research Department.
